Sun Storage Solution Posted: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 - 15:26 Tags: Sun, Microsystems, server, recovery, raid, Sun Microsystems launch new storage technology...

Sun Microsystems has launched the first three products in its new range of Unified Storage Systems, the 7000 series, also known as "Amber Road". The three models cover a wide range of capacities from 2 TB to 0.5 PB and offer considerable flexibility and substantial cost savings over traditional storage arrays.

Rather than using traditional dedicated hardware RAID controllers, the 7000 series carries out a greater proportion of the processing in software, allowing the appliances to be configured and reconfigured to more closely match and follow requirements. In addition to standard RAID levels, the systems allow for cloning, replication, snapshots and a host of other configuration options. Access options include CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, HTTP/FTP and WebDAV. All configuration options are included in the base price. The two larger models, the 7210 and 7410, support Sun's Flash Hybrid Storage Pool technology, which allows SSDs and hard drives to be combined to boost performance.

At around half the price of Sun's traditional storage arrays, consuming substantially less power and offering greater flexibility, Sun's latest storage systems could mark the start of a new trend in flexible storage appliances.

ExpiData Server Recovery offer Disaster Data Recovery services for failed RAID arrays, including Sun hardware, the Solaris Operating system and all Sun file systems.
